CYCLING
One of the best ways to explore Melbourne and Victoria is by bike.
The state’s compact size and wide open spaces make it ideal for short bicycle rides or serious touring. Contact Bicycle Victoria for maps, touring information and details on special rides that are available throughout the year.
Melbourne boasts an extensive network of off-road bicycle paths and on-road bicycle lanes to get you around. Outside Melbourne disused railway lines have been converted into safe, scenic rail trails throughout the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, Phillip Island, Gippsland and the Goldfields.
In Victoria, wearing helmets is compulsory, and all cyclists must follow the road rules. Taking your bike on Melbourne’s train system is allowed during off-peak periods, though you'll have a to pay a concession fare for your bike during busier times.
